Morristown NJ seeking more tax money

February 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Morristown NJ Mayor Donald Cresitello describes Morristown Memorial Hospital which is run by Atlantic Health System as a for profit institution, despite the hospitals nonprofit status.

In a bid to get 1.7 million dollars in real estate taxes from Morristown Memorial Hospital the Mayer is claiming that certain aspects of the institution are generating profits.  According to Morristown Business Administrator Michael Rogers, “Certain facets of this business are operating outside of the tax-exempt status.”

This will be an interesting fight.  It makes me wonder though, with Morristown government officials spending so much time trying to get more real estate tax money, when will they get to the critical task of cutting spending.  I am not aware of any reduction in overall spending by the city of Morristown, even if you adjust for inflation, they just keep raising the budget and raising the taxes, on way or the other.
